  • No matter the outcome of Friday’s road finale with Winfield, the McPherson High boys were guaranteed the AVCTL Division III title, having gone undefeated entering Friday night’s tilt.
Keaton Sorenson decided to make sure the rest of the league knew, without a doubt, the Bullpups were the toast of the division.
The senior poured in 28 points in the 70-33 win and was all over the glass, as well, picking up an unofficial 20 boards.
“That’s the kid I think we should see every night,” MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said. “He just flat out went after loose balls tonight. He went after every rebound. He was just fantastic.”
The Pups never faultered in the 37-point win, despite the absence of junior starter Ryan Horton, who sat out Friday’s season finale after suffering a head injury during the closing moments of Tuesday’s game with Rose Hill.
“We hope to have (Ryan) by Monday,” Kinnamon said of his sharpshooting guard’s prognosis. “I’m not counting on it, though.”
McPherson (18-2, 10-0 AVCTL Div. III) rolled out to a 21-6 lead after the first quarter and didn’t slump in the second. A Sorenson alley-oop lay up from Marcus Houghton brought the crowd to it’s feet at the 6:45 mark and increased the Bullpup lead to 21 points. MHS went up 42-11 leading into the half.
While the Vikings did manage to score 18 second half points, it was without leading scorer Will Adler. Adler was kept scoreless by the MHS defense, particularly Marcus Houghton, who was tasked with guarding Adler.
In the JV game, MHS won 54-41, while the freshmen were also winners, 58-32. Individual scoring was unavailable.
It will be a short turnaround for the Bullpups, as they open sub-state play against Smoky Valley at the Roundhouse Monday night at 7 p.m.
