  • With the recent upload of two new digital resources, the McPherson Public Library has completed a project to digitize its collection of atlases and make them available for use by the public on the library website.   The latest digital additions are a 1969 McPherson County Atlas and a 1937 McPherson County property ownership map.
Other McPherson County atlases in the digital collection are from the years of 1884, 1903, and 1921.  All of the atlases are vital resources for persons researching family and county history, because they show parcels of land and the property owners, and in most cases, buildings and other features.
Library Director Steve Read said that the 1937 map, which is part of The Linn Peterson Collection, was digitized along with the atlases because it showed the names of the property owners.  He noted that a unique feature of the map is that it also provides the locations of all oil and gas wells and dry holes in the county at that time, which was during the oil boom.
“These four atlases and the property map constitute a unique portrait of how the county developed over time,” he said. “And they represent the library’s continuing commitment to providing online access to our historical collections.”
