  • It's time....gather five of your friends to join your team for the Walk Kansas fitness challenge that starts March 17 and goes through May 11, 2013! Walk Kansas is a state-wide effort.  You can join others from across Kansas for this fitness challenge experience. Walk Kansas celebrates it's 12th year fitness challenge offering and has an added a challenge.
Teams choose their goals for physical activity. Challenge one meets basic physical activity guidelines of 2 hours (150 minutes) of moderate to vigorous activity per person each week. If each member met this goal the team would, collectively, walk 423 miles or the distance across the state.
Challenge two requires each member to log five hours of physical activity each week. If this goal is met the team would, collectively, the team would walk 846 miles, the distance across the state and back.
And, new this year, challenge three. Each participant logs six hours of moderate to vigorous activity per week.  Collectively, the team would walk 1,200 miles which is the distance around the perimeter of the state.
Walking isn't the only activity that counts. There are many other activities that count, and strengthening exercises count too.
Just a reminder — any activity you report should be performed for a minimum of 10 consecutive minutes.
This is an exceptional opportunity to promote health and fitness to the entire family, from small children to grandparents, while building family unity. It's a great way to enjoy time together as a group or one-on-one with a child or teenager.
This program has proven successful in weight management while promoting healthy lifestyles. This program works effectively, because anyone can do it. You can do it anytime of the day and you do not have to go to a specific location. The friendly competition among and between teams makes it fun, motivational, and inspirational.
Team packet registrations are available at the Extension Office and need to be returned by March 14.  Walk Kansas will start on March 17 and finish on May 11.
The cost is $5 per participant to cover program costs. However, team captains will not need to pay the $5 registration fee. Registration materials are also available at www.mcpherson.ksu.edu or for more state-wide information you can look at www.walkkansas.org  Teams may register on-line, but will need to pay the participation fees at the Extension Office before being official registered.
In addition, carolina blue, military green or purple t-shirts and apparel items with the Walk Kansas logo are available for an additional charge. T-shirts and other apparel items need to be ordered. The items will be available the week after being ordered, so if orders are place by March 8, they will be available for the start of Walk Kansas.  However, items may be ordered at any time; just know there is a one week waiting period. Samples of the T-shirts and colors are on display at the Extension Office.
