  • Wendell F. “Pete” Nirider, 101, of Madison, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Holiday Resort in Emporia.

  • Wendell F. “Pete” Nirider, 101, of Madison, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Holiday Resort in Emporia.
    Wendell was born Aug. 3, 1911, in Roxbury, the son of George and Lela Nichols Nirider.
    He graduated from Roxbury High School in 1929 and went on to attend Kansas Wesleyan College and Brown Mackie School of Business.
    He began working as a bookkeeper and operated the Bulk Station for the Morrison Grain Company in Roxbury.  He later bought out the Bulk Station operation and ran it until the mid 1970’s when he moved to Madison to be near his grandchildren.
    Wendell was joined in marriage to Ruth Spilman on April 28, 1939, in Roxbury. They enjoyed more than 70 years of marriage. Ruth preceded him in death on May 9, 2010.
    Wendell was a member the First Presbyterian Church in Madison. Other memberships included the Lions Club in Roxbury and Madison where he served as secretary in both locations.
    Survivors include, a daughter, Linda and husband Jim Meyer of Madison; a son, Jim Nirider and his significant other Charlotte of Seattle, Washington; two grandchildren, Christal and Carmen.  
    He was preceded in death by a grandson, Clay Meyer; three sisters, Blanche Ellen Satterlee, Vera May Crowther and Daisy Claudira Warner; two brothers, Harry Glen and Chester Everett Nirider.
    Funeral services will be  at 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at the  First Presbyterian Church in Madison. Burial will follow services at Blakely Cemetery.
    Mr. Nirider will lie in state from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 at the VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison Education Assistance Fund and sent in care of the VanArsdale Funeral Home at PO Box 488, Madison, KS 66860.
