  • The McPherson College men will have a tall challenge to overcome in the first round  of the National NAIA Division II Tournament if they want a repeat of last year’s Final Four run.
    The Bulldogs have been seeded No. 32 will face No. 1 seed William Penn in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday afternoon.
    The Statesmen took both the Midwest Collegiate Conference regular season and tournament crowns, going 30-1 in the process.
    William Penn’s only loss came to Bellevue University (Neb.) on Dec. 7, an 82-71 setback. The Statesmen responded to that loss with a school-record 16 game winning streak.
    They are led by MCC player of the year Brandon Beasley, who averages 18.8 points and 8.7 rebounds.
    Tipoff from the campus of the College of the Ozarks will be at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday.
    The winner will face either Embry-Riddle (Fla.) or Bethel (Ind.), who play Wednesday at noon.
    The KCAC will also be represented by regular season champion the University of Saint Mary, who went 22-8 (16-2 KCAC) on the year.
    The Spires will face Saint Xavier (Ill.) in the first round Wednesday night at 9:45 p.m.
    Should they be successful, they will face the winner of Indiana Southeast and Valley Center State (N.D.) next Friday at 4 p.m.
