The question
How fast is too fast on an icy road? Is there a set speed limit not to exceed during icy conditions?

The answer
Captain Todd Martins with the McPherson Police Department said there is no set speed limit during icy conditions. Any speeding citations are determined by the officer on scene. Martins said those citations are often decided at accidents, when a driver is determined to have been driving too fast to stop at an appropriate time for a pedestrian or another vehicle.
Kansas law regarding icy road speeds is found in the 40th edition of the Standard Traffic Ordinance for Kansas cities.
“No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions ... every person shall drive at a safe and appropriate speed ... when special hazards exist with respect to pedestrians or other traffic or by reason of weather or highway conditions.”
