Kansas Honor Flight, an organization that allows veterans to visit war memorials, announced they have six flights fully funded for the upcoming year. The first flight will leave Wichita April 24 and return April 26. Their plans are to add more flights as the funds become available.
To qualify to go on a Kansas Honor Flight, one must have served during these years:
- Dec. 7, 1941, to Dec. 31, 1946, (World War II)
- June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955, (Korean War)
- Feb. 28, 1961, to May 7, 1975, (Vietnam War)
Because of the closing of one Honor flight Hub in Kansas, records may have been lost.
Everyone eligible needs to apply. If anyone knows of a World War II veteran who may have been overlooked, the organization needs to know as soon as possible.
World War II-era veterans are the highest priority right now. Terminally ill veterans also are flown at a high priority.
McPherson County Cans 4 Cash 4 Honor Flights has funded one veteran already in 2013.
More than $730 has been raised from aluminum cans from throughout McPherson County.
This is a total of 1,341 pounds of cans.
“Think about this amount the next time you take a sip of your favorite canned beverage,” said Warren Vincent of Cans 4 Cash 4 Honor Flights.
It now takes $700 to send one veteran.
Cans may be dropped off any time at the southeast corner of First Street and Baer in McPherson. Vincent also will make house or business calls to pick up cans.
Special donation days are the first Saturday of the month at Scott's IGA in Lindsborg, the second Saturday at Canton Grocery, the third Saturday at Moundridge Recycling Center in Moundridge (Moundridge will accept cans whenever their recycling center is open), the fourth Saturday at Marquette at a location to be announced.
The collection times will start at 9 a.m. and go until at least 1 p.m.
