  • The Bulldog faithful turned out Monday to send off the McPherson College men, who will be looking to duplicate last year’s NAIA National Tournament Final Four run starting Wednesday.
The Bulldogs will open up play against the No. 1 seed in William Penn University. Tip off from Point Outlook, Mo., is set for 1:45 p.m.
For Mac College head coach Tim Swartzendruber and his Bulldogs, the task of upsetting the tournament’s top seed is old hat by now, as McPherson became just the second team in KCAC history to take the conference tournament championship as an eight seed last Tuesday. They started their historic run with an upset of KCAC No. 1 Saint Mary in overtime, then repeated the process with Friends and Sterling in the semifinal and championship games, respectively.
“I am so proud of these young men,” Swartzendruber said. “We have had to overcome much adversity this year, but this group is playing their best basketball right now.”
They will need their best against William Penn, as the Statesmen went 30-1 this season, including a perfect 12-0 conference record. Their only loss came on Dec. 7 against Bellevue University, but responded with a 16-game winning streak that culminated in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Postseason Tournament.
Brandon Beasley leads five Statesmen that average 10 points or more per game. Beasley clocks in with 18.8 points per game, shooting 54.4 percent from the field. Keith Steffeck is next with 14.9 PPG.
Arman Rasul and Kevin Fay both average 11.4 PPG, while Taylor Stoutner is right behind with 11.3 and has hit 105 three-point buckets this season.
