  • Demolition began Wednesday on the MKC terminal on Maple Street in McPherson.
A large crane has been brought in to reach the upper levels of the elevators. As a result, Maple Street has been temporarily blocked to traffic.
The terminal had not been used for some time, Kerry Watson, communications specialist for MKC, said.
Watson said MKC officials were concerned about the structural viability of the aging terminal and decided demolition was the best option. Watson said the company also wished to improve the aesthetics of the site.
MKC officials have not decided what the company will do with the vacant lot, but Watson said an office building may eventually be built there.
The demolition process, including cleanup, is estimated to take about a month.
However, Watson said the crane will be there only until the upper portion of the terminal is demolished.
The company will try to get the roads open around the site as soon as possible, she said. Watson said the company apologizes for any inconvenience the demolition may cause local residents.
