  • Tigers fall in NCCAA tourney 73-62

  • The Central Christian College men ended their season Thursday night, falling 73-62 to Oklahoma Christian University in the opening round of the National Christian College Athletic Association’s Central Region tournament.
    The Tigers (19-12) never led, but they gave the Eagles all they could handle in both halves, closing to within 24-22 with seven minutes to go in the first. OCU senior center Will Reinke sparked a 7-0 run for the Eagles through the 5:57 mark. OCU carried their lead to 43-34 at the half.
    OCU’s lead extended to 15 in the second half, but Central’s Kaelon Gary knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to get the Tigers back under double digits with 3:15 left to go. Central didn’t have anymore left in the comeback, though, as OCU pushed the lead back out to 11 with just under a minute left to go.
    Chris Jones, Central Christian’s all-time leading scorer, finished out his senior campaign with 18 points. That leaves him with 1,637 total for his career. He also picked up a double-double with 12 rebounds.
    Gary finished with 16 points in his final game in a Tiger uniform.
    Reinke led Oklahoma Christian with 18 points, followed by Willie Harper’s 13 and Kendre Talley’s 10.
    Central shot 23-of-64 from the field and made 67 percent of their free throws. The Tigers coughed up the ball 15 times and picked up 39 boards in the contest.
    Oklahoma Christian was 31-of-68 from the field and were a paltry 4-of-22 from behind the three-point arc. They just beat out Central Christian under the glass, picking up 42 boards in the win. They also had fewer turnovers with 12.
    The Eagles will advance into the second round of play in the NCCAA Central Regional tonight, as they will take on Mid-America Christian in the 8 p.m. game. The other men’s semifinal will see Southern Nazarene take on No. 1 seed McMurray State at 4 p.m. today.
