  • The Bethany College men's golf team won the Oklahoma Panhandle State Spring Golf Invitational held at Buffalo Dunes Golf Course in Garden City on Monday and Tuesday.
This is the Swedes second win in as many tournaments. Sophomore Ben Johnson won the tournament individually.
After round one, the Swedes were in first place (305) just six strokes ahead of second place Garden City Community College (311). Bethany had the top two low rounds in Johnson (71) and Jose Lelo de Larrea (72).
"Ben and Jose had tremendous rounds on the first day given the weather and pin placements that were as extreme as I have ever seen in a tournament," Bethany coach Jon Daniels said.
Pittsburg State, Kansas Wesleyan, Dodge City Community College, Garden City No. 2, Northwest Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma Panhandle State completed the first round.
The second consecutive tournament of windy and cold weather conditions kept scores higher than normal. The Swedes continued to battle, however, and, despite the top two players struggling in the second round, they had enough of a lead after round one.
A strong finish by Matt O'Neill helped them win (613) by a margin of 13 strokes over second place Garden City Community College (626).
"A win is always nice and given the weather and being an NCAA Division II tournament, we shot OK but need some solid practice before our next tournament," Daniels said. "It is nice to not have to always count on one or two individuals and someone is coming to the front on every round."
Individually, Johnson placed first (71-77) and de Larrea placed third (72-81) losing second place by one stroke to Will Paulsell of Garden City (75-77). O'Neil finished in fifth place (80-75). Other players for the Swedes were Greg Miller (T13), James Tisdale (T16), and Lex Deal (T24).
Bethany next travels to Winfield to play in the first conference tournament of the spring season. Southwestern College hosts at Quail Ridge Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday.
