Emporia left fielder David Richards’ grand slam in the bottom of the fifth highlighted a 12-run inning, as the Hornets defeated McPherson College 16-5 Wednesday at Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after infielder Brendan Miller drove in short stop Josh Grant off a double to center field. The Hornets would respond with a three-run second inning.
McPherson cut the lead to one when catcher Bennett Ratzloff grounded out to short, allowing outfielder Taylor Werts to score and make it 3-2 in the fourth.
Emporia responded in the fifth with that monster inning. Hornet short stop Ashton McCoy had a two-RBI double to kick off the scoring marathon, then came back after Richards’ grand slam and knocked out a two-run home run of his own before McPherson could manage to get the third out.
The Hornets picked up one more run in the sixth, with the Bulldogs able to pick up a run in the seventh off a sacrifice fly to center by pinch hitter Tyler Baker.
Bulldog center fielder Zack Wilson added a two-run home run in the top of the eighth to make it 15-6.
McPherson had five runs off 10 hits in 35 at-bats. Emporia got their 16 runs off 13 hits in 36 tries.
Brant Rhoades (0-1) picked up the loss for McPherson (4-11), pitching two innings and giving up three runs on five hits. Dylan McEwin (1-0) got the win for Emporia (8-11), going two innings and giving up only one run on three hits while striking out five.
The Bulldogs will begin conference play Friday, as they will face Tabor College in a four-game series this weekend.
Friday’s doubleheader will be played in Hillsboro, while Saturday’s games will be at Light Capital Diamond. Both days will have 1 p.m. first pitches.
