Members of the Harry B. Dorst, Unit No. 24 of the American Legion Auxiliary, department of Kansas, met March 4. The meeting was conducted by past president Margaret Henningsen. Opening prayer was given by honorary junior chaplain Shayla Purdy, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary. There were seven officers and four past presidents in attendance. There were no new members or guests introduced, but several members of the junior unit were in attendance. Minutes of the February meeting were read and approved as corrected. The treasurer’s report was given and filed for audit. Reports were given by unit chairmen and several reported sending their reports to the district chairmen.
Junior activities chairman Ferne Anderson reported on the junior convention conducted March 1 and 2 at the post. Unit members helping were Teresa Rauh, Tammy Purdy and Cheryl Criswell. The following junior members were elected to department offices: Sierah Pennington, Shayanne Anderson, Brittany Pennington, and Kylie Criswell. During their convention, the juniors fixed 75 hero packs for soldiers, learned flag folding and etiquette and how the poppies are made. Ferne reported the juniors also will help with the riders’ fish fry Marcy 9 and the Legion birthday dinner March 19.
Membership chairman, Teesa Rauh reported the unit has 218 paid members and the goal is 276. Dues for 2013 are due now and members were urged to contact the unpaid members to remind them of dues. Send your dues to Tresa Rauh at 905 Turkey Creek Drive, McPherson, KS 67460.
Correspondence included information from department president Cherie Thomas and letters of endorsement for candidates for department officers. Thank you cards were read from: the families of Eric Rauh and Walt Hanna; the Robert J. Dole Veterans Medical Center in Wichita for the unit’s monthly donation to their hospitalized veterans; and the Wounded Warrior Project for a unit donation.
The county government day, which was to be in February, had to be cancelled due to bad weather.
Margaret reported sloppy joes already had been prepared and asked if the auxiliary would buy it to be used on bingo nights. No new date has been set. It was agreed to buy this for unit use. The McPherson County Council dinner also scheduled for that night was cancelled and rescheduled for March 7.
Discussion was conducted on the upcoming birthday dinner for the Legion. The meat, bread and drinks will be furnished by the auxiliary and the dinner will be covered dish.
Discussion was conducted on a donation to the district for the purchase of a new banner. Since no information has been received, Nancy Janssen will contact the district secretary for more information on the project.
President Carol Ek urged the members to write their congressmen regarding the national budget.
Margaret thanked Nadine Nichols for hosting the meeting and announced the next meeting will be April 1 with Pam Unruh and Margaret hosting.
Upcoming events are St. Patrick’s Day Party March 16, Family Night for the Chamber Agriculture Committee March 21, and the King Midas dance March 23.
