Thanks to two McPherson literary groups, a cash prize of $100 will be awarded to the winning entrant of a writing contest at this year’s WordFest writing conference. The contest is titled Choose Your Words Wisely and is administered on-site.
In the Choose Your Words Wisely Contest, writers pick one word each from five grab-bags of words: person, place, prop, perturbation, and pot stirrer — and in an hour, gathered together in one room, each contestant will write a short story or epic poem including those words. Paper and pens supplied; using one’s own pen is allowed. Pencils are not allowed. No computers unless one has the ability to print on-site (printers not supplied). Stories will be judged by members of MacWriters and conference session leaders. The winner of the $100 prize as well as any honorable mentions will be announced by the end of conference on Saturday.
To be qualified to win, writers must pay the entry fee described below, use and underline all of the chosen five words in the work, and create a coherent story with a beginning, middle, and end. Legibility is necessary; correct spelling is important only insofar as it lends to readability.
For those attending the conference, the cash-prize contest requires an additional fee of $5. For those wishing to attend this session only, there is a single-session fee. The cost is $15 per session, or $10 for students, senior citizens or McPherson Museum members (must show ID or membership card).
The Progressive Literature Club and the Ladies Reading Circle, both of McPherson, are co-sponsoring this fun, quirky, and challenging aspect of WordFest, to be conducted April 19 and 20 at Miller Library on the campus of McPherson College.
The full conference fee is $75 through April 4. After April 4, the fee is $90. This includes the reception activities Friday evening, and lunch and sessions on Saturday. There is an optional Friday afternoon workshop requiring an additional $15 fee.
WordFest’s fifth annual conference is sponsored by McPherson Concrete.
