A 12-3 win over Ecclesia College Friday afternoon highlighted McPherson College’s opening day of the Sterling College Tournament in Hutchinson.
The Bulldogs also defeated Bethel College 5-3 in the opening game Friday but fell 6-5 to Hastings College (Neb.) in the 6 p.m. game.
McPherson had two runs in the first inning, three in the second and fourth innings and a four-run third to claim the victory in that game. Ariel McGee had three hits in four at-bats, with one RBI in the game.
Jenna Kaiser and Amanda Baxter both had three RBIs for McPherson. Kaila Atkinson picked up the win on the mound.
A three-run fifth inning led Mac College to the 5-3 win over Bethel. Baxter had two RBIs for the Bulldogs, while McGee and Whitney Miller each had a pair of hits. Allison Love was the winning pitcher.
Hastings led the Bulldogs 3-2 after four innings, but Mac battled back and took a 5-3 lead in a three-run sixth inning. Hastings responded with a three-run seventh, however, to take the 6-5 win.
Miller and Kaci Nichols each had two hits, while McGee had a pair of RBIs. Love took the loss for McPherson.
Mac College moves to 2-7 on the year.
The Bulldogs faces Peru State this morning at 10 a.m. in the second day of the tournament. They will also play Morningside College at noon.
