Julia was born in McPherson, Kan., Aug. 7, 1952, becoming the sixth child in the family of her parents, Mary Louise and Harry Ledell. Julia brought joy and a spirit of fun and adventure into the world, always willing to create and/or join in laughter, fun, meeting others and going places near and far, and yes willing to engage in mischief from time to time. Her smile could get her into any place she wanted to go and to talk with anyone who was there.
She greatly enjoyed college, graduating in 1974 from Fort Hays (Kan.) State College with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and later obtained a master’s degree from the University of Kansas. She practiced nursing in Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri, with the bulk of her career serving on the faculty at the University of Kansas School of Nursing. Julia was regarded as one of the best and most well liked faculty members teaching her obstetrics students the knowledge and skills they needed as well as helping them develop the qualities of a nurse that most benefit patients. She emphasized that a caring bedside manner is never old fashioned.
On March 25, 2013, after a long, painful struggle with cancer, Julia died peacefully at Kansas City (M0.) Hospice.
She is survived by her beloved, devoted, apple of her eye, daughter Sarah, and Sarah’s husband Jake Lemmond, of Kansas City, and all of her siblings: Marilyn (Roy) Reed of Lenexa, Kan.; Phyllis Bell of Tulsa, Okla.; Joe (Sharon) Ledell of McPherson, Kan.; Marjorie Ledell of Vancouver, Wash.; and Judy Ledell of Atchison, Kan., the sister always the closest to Julia, especially during her eight years of fighting cancer.
Julia will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her and forever held dear in our hearts. She is fondly remembered as a fun-loving, zestful, spunky mother, sibling and friend.
