  • Bulldogs pick up first KCAC wins in Saint Mary sweep

  • McPherson College finally got over the KCAC hump, picking up their first two wins Thursday afternoon at Light Captial Diamonds, taking game one 4-1 and game two 5-4.

  • McPherson College finally got over the KCAC hump, picking up their first two wins Thursday afternoon at Light Captial Diamonds, taking game one 4-1 and game two 5-4.
    The Bulldogs scored two runs the bottom of the third, as Taylor Werts scored off a Josh Grant sacrifice fly to right field, followed by an RBI single from Bennett Ratzloff.
    Brendan Miller drove in two more runs off a single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth.
    Scott Hughes picked up the game one win with 6 1/3 innings work, giving up one run on only three hits. He struck out four and walked one.
    Miller had the hot hand for the Bulldogs, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Ratzloff went 1-for-1 with an RBI.
    The Bulldogs won game two in walk-off fashion, as Miller drove in Jose Nossa off a single through the hole at short in the bottom of the ninth inning.
    The two teams had gone back and forth on the score, with Saint Mary holding a 2-1 lead after the fourth. McPherson sent two home in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, but the Spires responded with a two-run sixth.
    McPherson got a run in the seventh to tie the game.
    Taylor Werts picked up the win after coming in for starting pitcher Nolan Huelsman. Werts pitched four innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
    Miller once again was huge for McPherson, hitting 4-for-5 in game two with three RBIs. Grant and Andrew Pina both had one RBI each in the winning effort.
    McPherson will be on the road Saturday, in another doubleheader against Saint Mary. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
