  • The Hospira branch of McPherson is adding a 25,000 square foot addition to the southwest corner of the facility at 1776 N. Centennial Drive.
Andrew Knudten, vice president of operations, said the expansion is intended to accommodate the significant growth during recent years, as well as accommodate projected future growth.
Hospira has reportedly created more than 1,000 new jobs at the McPherson facility since 2009.
“We’re making sure first and foremost that we have growth and don’t put those jobs at risk,” Knudten said. “Second, we’re seeing how we can grow and expand and support additional growth with the employee base we have in the surrounding areas. We’re trying to be smart and be here for a very long time.”
Knudten said while the new expansion will accommodate for growth, the McPherson branch is not anticipating another large spike in employment.
Hospira began construction on the expansion in January, after receiving necessary permits from the city of McPherson. According to the January 2013 monthly building report for the city of McPherson, the cost of the expansion is just more than $5 million, including an additional $1.9 million for renovations.
Knudten said the expansion is a response to the McPherson’s branch’s successful manufacturing operations.
“There’s a clear investment from Hospira in the McPherson site for important medicine,” Knudten said. “We anticipate continued investment in our sterile manufacturing operations.”
The Hospira site of McPherson specializes in producing sterile injection medicine.
Kyle Ratzlaff, engineering maintenance manager, said the expansion will consist of two floors. The bottom floor, he said, will accommodate manufacturing operations, while the second floor will provide additional office space for the facility.
Ratzlaff said the expansion is just one example of the company’s continued growth, citing the constructing of a new aseptic filling line, which packages sterile materials in a way that maintains sterility.  The expansion is currently being framed, and is expected to be finished this summer.
