  • Bullpups set personal bests at Newton Invitational

  • The McPherson High track and field teams put up some strong individual showings, including numerous personal records, during Tuesday’s Newton Invitational.
    According to MHS track and field coach Jace Pavlovich, 13 members of the boys’ team and three members of the girls’ team set personal bests in the meet, impressive as McPherson only took a portion of the varsity squad. Pavlovich said the focus this week is on the Marion meet on Friday.
    Junior Keshawn Sewell had the top finish Tuesday for the Pups, coming in first in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, five inches. Sewell also finished third in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet, two inches.
    Other top six boys field event finishes came from Chris Stoppel, who was third in the high jump with a height of five feet, eight inches. Adam Boyer came in sixth with a jump of five feet, six inches.
    In the boys javelin, Tanner Hamilton was fourth with a throw of 133 feet, 10 inches, while Andy Zeitlow was two spots behind with a distance of 128 feet, three inches.
    Kyler Jost was the lone track top six finish for the boys, placing fourth in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 45.17 seconds.
    The top finish on the girls team came from junior Janae Barnes, who finished second in the high jump with a height of four feet, eight inches. Ivanna Moyer finished fourth in the discus with a distance of 107 feet, five inches. Bri Cooks was sixth in discus with a throw of 99 feet, one inch.
    Top finishes on the track side of the girls’ competition went to Payton Shook, who finished fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.92 seconds. Senior Taylor Scheidegger was fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 51.69 seconds.
    Also competing in the meet were 5A and 6A teams, including Wichita North, Bishop Carrol, Hutchinson and Salina Central.
