The McPherson High girls swim team continued their winning ways Tuesday, as the team finished third and more swimmers qualified for the state meet in May.
The combined MHS/Smoky Valley 400-yard freestyle relay team of Cheyenne Regier, Ellen Yowell, Shae Cook and Claire Denk brough home a gold medal, swimming the race in a time of 4:20.22, 10 seconds faster than the cut off for the state qualifying time.
They were 0.5 seconds faster than the Winfield relay team, who finished with a time of 4:20.73.
Denk also qualified for state in two more races, including the 200 freestyle relay with Cook, Baily Bolden and Logann Stambaugh. They finished the race in 1:57.59, a third place finish.
Denk also took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:09.89, easily outdistancing runner up Jordyn Tuck from St. Paul by three seconds.
Regier won the silver in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:39.79.
“I am very proud of how well the girls have swam these first two meets,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. “It’s been two totally different venues against different teams.”
Winfield took first in the team scoring with 427 points, followed by Field Kindley with 336.5. McPherson finished with 254 points, with El Dorado (224.5) and Campus (146) rounding out the top five.
Fisher said her girls are ready to work even harder now that the spring holidays and a few snow days are behind them.
“The girls will begin digging even harder into more and more yardage throughout the next month,” Fisher said, “to make sure they are ready to swim their very best at both AVCTL and the State meet in May.”
The Pups return to the pool this afternoon at Salina for the Salina South Invitational.
