  • The McPherson High girls swim team continued their winning ways Thursday at Salina, with MHS’ Cheyenne Regier and Smoky Valley’s Clair Denk both qualifying for state in two more races in the Salina South Invitational.
McPherson coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said Regier swam her best 100-yard butterfly of the year, finishing the race in 1:11.36 to claim fifth and qualify for the state meet in May.
Denk, meanwhile, took second in the 50 freestyle with a state qualifying time of 26.58 seconds. She also took first in the 100 freestyle, swimming it in 58.17 seconds, which was faster than her previous state qualifying time in that race.
The two combined with Sarah Almquist and Shea Cook to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:52.72.
Fisher also praised Almquist’s lead-off leg of the 200 medley relay, swimming the backstroke in a time of 33.94 seconds. Denk, Regier and Alex Underwood swam the other three legs of the relay in a total time of 2:06.90, claiming second place.
“Our first three meets have really tested the whole team, as they have now faced most of the teams that they will be swimming against the rest of the season,” Fisher said. “That gives them a better idea of what they are going to have to do to place at the AVCTL and State meets next month.”
Fisher said the focus now will be staying mentally tough for State.
“It’s out biggest challenge the next four weeks,” Fisher said. “We will be increasing our yardage in practice and will be competing the next four meets physically tired.”
The team’s next meet is Tuesday at Newton.
