The first day of the MCAC Crossover Tournament at Wall Park was both a shining day and a hard day for the Central Christian College softball team.
The Tigers, hosting the first ever tournament that brings all of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference teams together, were run-ruled in all three of their games Friday. They fell to Bellevue University 9-0, 10-1 to Waldorf College and 16-2 to College of Saint Mary.
“Not a good performance by us by any means,” Central Christian coach Chad Kerr said. “We do have some injuries that we’re working around, but, still, that’s no excuse. We’re just not playing good softball right now.”
The strong south winds, which gusted up to around 40 miles per hour at times, allowed for some of the teams to put up big numbers during the course of the afternoon, including a 21-3 Central Baptist College blowout of CSM.
Despite the overall poor playing by the Tigers, though, Kerr did see some bright spots, notably from the hitting.
“With the weather and the Easter break, we were for a good amount of time,” Kerr said. “The bats finally started coming alive for us near the end of game two and into game three, but not nearly what we needed to do. Just pretty much every aspect of our game is not real good right now, but it happens to the best teams in the world. We’ll figure it out.”
Kerr, who also serves as Central Christian’s Athletic Director, was more than pleased with how well the first day of the tournament had gone.
“The community has really rallied around this,” he said. “It’s a big economic boon for this town. I believe there’s no hotels available right now.”
While nothing has been stated about future tournaments returning to McPherson, Kerr is optimistic.
“We have some small logistic things we have to figure out,” Kerr said. “We’ll find out (the MCAC) wants to have it here again next year and we’ll work the bugs out. But, as it’s the first time this has ever been held, I think it’s gone really well.”
