  • Members of the Harry B. Dorst, Unit 24 of the American Legion Auxiliary, department of Kansas, met April 1. The meeting was conducted by past president Peg Henningsen. Opening prayer was given by vice president Tammy Purdy, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion Auxiliary. There were six officers and two past presidents in attendance. There were no new members or guests introduced.
    Peg Henningsen and Nancy Janssen conducted a memorial service for the following unit members lost this past year: Jayne Bremyer, ElVera Cunningham, Joyce Decker, Loretta Pierson, Jeanne Price, Johnnie Schmidt and EdMae Urbanek.
    Minutes of the March meeting were read, corrected and approved as corrected. Treasurer Ferne Anderson gave the March financial report, which was accepted and will be filed for audit. Peg reported the unit has made a donation to the fifth district to help pay for new district flags.
    Correspondence included information from department President Cherie Thomas and letters of endorsement for candidates for department and district officers. A thank you card was read from Vivian Embers; a thank you letter from Morgan Anderson, last year’s Sunflower Girls State delegate sponsored by the unit; and a thank you letter from the Robert J. Dole Veterans Medical Center in Wichita for the unit’s monthly donation to the hospitalized veterans.
    Peg thanked Pam Unruh for assisting in hosting the meeting and Sue Hervy for helping with the boys’ and girls’ state meeting March 26. Two delegates from last year’s Girls’ State spoke to the group about their experiences.
    Discussion was conducted on the fifth district convention April 27 in Newton. Delegates elected were Peg Henningsen, Tresa Rauh, Tammy Purdy, Pam Unruh, Jonna Criswell and Nan Hale. Alternates are Ferne Anderson, Nadine Nichols, Connie Ketterman and Phyllils McNaul. Delegates-at-large are Carol Ek and Nancy Janssen. There will be a district executive board meeting April 26 and a past presidents’ breakfast Saturday morning.
    Peg thanked all the members and juniors who helped with the American Legion’s birthday dinner, both the cooking and the decorations.
    Peg reported the post is still sponsoring care packages for the “Friends of Active Troops” project, and Nancy Janssen moved t he unit donate to this project, seconded by Tammy Purdy, the motion carried.
    Ferne reported the April Family Night will be April 18 and the proceeds will go to the junior unit to raise funds to send Sierah Pennington, Honorary Department Junior Auxiliary President to the National Convention in Huston in August.
    Upcoming events include: appreciation dinner for Legion family volunteers April 20; and the fifth district convention April 27 in Newton. The next McPherson County council meeting will be May 23 at the McPherson post. The next meeting will be May 6 at the post home.
