  • Independence and creativity, these are things we don’t always remember that our youth need.
Destination Imagination is an event that strives to promote just that.
On Saturday McPherson will be hosting the Kansas Destination Imagination Tournament at Eisenhower Elementary School. Thirty-six teams from around the state will be heading to town for this all day event which is the wrap up of what has been a four-month project for these kids!
Destination Imagination is actually an International Program and last year was the first time McPherson students got involved. This year the district has more than 20 teams competing and was asked to host the state tournament. This has been a huge undertaking, but one that is well worth it for students.
I am very fortunate to be involved by providing activities and extra learning experiences for participants while they are not in their competition. Each team has a set time that they will make their presentation during the 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. competition day, but while the other 35 teams are presenting, a group will have plenty of down time. Through McPherson County 4-H Youth Development there will be opportunities to keep kids busy and learning all day.
The public is invited to attend this day and we could even use your help. There are dozens of opportunities for you to come help, even if for just an hour or two on Saturday. Volunteers are needed to help with welcoming and registration, door monitoring and even leading and supervising the extra activities. No prior training or experience is needed for any of these tasks, we would just love to have you help with this state-wide event. To learn more about the event or inquire about volunteering you can contact tournament director Carmen Zeisler (carmen.zeisler@mcpherson.com) or contact me at the Extension Office and I will try to answer your questions or point you in the right direction!
I hope you will take some time to come visit this event and support the more than 100 students that will be competing from right here in McPherson as they show off their creativity, innovation and independence!
