  • Letter: Rails to Trail “or” Railroaded to Trails

  • I am the owner of approximately a half mile of rail corridor that has been rail-banked for use in the Rails to Trails project in McPherson County. I have many questions and several concerns that have not been addressed by the current project coordinator. There has been no communication by the project coordinator with the adjacent landowners that will be affected and the community that will benefit from it.

My biggest concern at this point is the attitude taken by Central Kansas Conservancy in the ownership of this rail corridor project. Past articles (McPherson Sentinel, December 2011) have shown that until CKC is made to take on the responsibilities mandated by state and federal statute, they are more than willing to let those items slide until someone forces them to follow the statutes. This makes me wonder if and when the project will be completed.
There is a lot of information on the Rails to Trails Conservancy website, but I wonder if CKC recognizes the assumption of responsibility that has been placed upon them. If CKC does not assume responsibility, will the taxpayers ultimately be financially responsible for this trail once it has been completed?
Although, in theory, this is a great project and beneficial to the rural population, the reality is this rail corridor has been taken hostage by a small group of people forcing their will upon my community and, ultimately, the taxpayer.
