  • Bullpup thinclads finish second at Augusta

  • McPherson High School's track and field teams once again made a solid accounting of themselves, this time with both the boys and girls teams taking second at Saturday's Augusta Invitational.

  • McPherson High School's track and field teams once again made a solid accounting of themselves, this time with both the boys and girls teams taking second at Saturday's Augusta Invitational.
    Christian Wankum dominated the girls distance running events, taking first in both the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:34 and the 3,200, clocking in there at 12:03.27. Payton Shook took first in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 16.20 seconds. Laynie Moore was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.21 seconds.
    In the girls field events, Brianna Cooks claimed a first place finish in the shot put with a distance of 39-feet, 6-and-one-half inches, which was three inches from setting the school record. Bethany Bouray came in fourth with a throw of 32-feet, 5-and-one-half inches. Ivanna Moyer was right behind Bouray in fifth place with a distance of 32-feet, 4-inches. Cooks also finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 91-feet, 8-inches.
    Moyer also claimed a first place finish, hers coming in the discus with a throw of 103-feet, 1-inch. Alisa Becker finished just behind with 102-feet, 7-inches. Moyer also brought home a fifth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 32-feet, 4-inches.
    Megan Pederson took third in the high jump with a height of 4-feet, 8-inches. Meredith Hess was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 14-feet, 6-and-one-half inches. Bethany Bouray finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 91-feet, 7-inches.
    McPherson tallied 103 points as a team, a distant second to top-placer Maize South (137.5). Andover Central (74.5), Circle (64) and El Dorado (48) round out the top five.
    On the boys side, Keshawn Sewell once again had a banner day for the Bullpups in the field events. Sewell took first in both the long jump and the triple jump, going 20-feet, 4-inches in the former and 42-feet, 5-inches in the latter. Sean Seymore was second in the triple jump with a distance of 38-feet, 10 inches. Cedric Shell was fourth with a jump of 37-feet, 10 inches.
    Chris Stoppel took second in the high jump with a height of 6-feet, while Tanner Hamilton brought home a bronze in the javelin with a throw of 148-feet, 8-inches.
    Collin French took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 42-feet, three-quarters-of-an-inch.
    In the running events, Ryen Trost brought home a first-place finish in the 800-meter with a time of 2:06.20. Austin O'Bannon was third in the 200, clocking in at 23.37 seconds. Kyler Kinnamon finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with 11.27 seconds.
    Corey Long was sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:56.89.
    Maize South capture the boys team crown with 131 points. The Bullpups were second with 84, followed by Andover Central (76), El Dorado (67) and Winfield (48).
    The Pups next meet comes Friday afternoon at Emporia State University's Welch Stadium. The Emporia Invitational runs both Friday and Saturday.
