  • Young Devonte Gishman was given three beanbags to shoot through a small hole from a few feet away while his mother cheered him on.
The first and second shot hit the sides of the target, with the third just barely missing the hole. The booth attendant kicked it in and gave him a high five anyway.
The beanbag throw was just one of many activities available to young children at the Family Fair, which was conducted Tuesday night at the McPherson 4-H Building. Other activities for children included hula hoops and small balls to play with.
The fair played host to 30 different booths, each one displaying various county resources available for parents of young children.
The fair is a bi-annual event sponsored by the McPherson County Coalition for Children and Families. This year was the seventh fair.
Alana Murphy, coalition chairwoman, said the fair provides fun and information for both kids and parents
“We hope to make it a one-stop shop for family resources,” she said.
A large number of those booths were headed by Hutchinson Community College medical students.
Those booths taught kids a variety of important issues, including fire safety, about bullying and the importance of dental hygiene.
The event was entirely free, and attendees were treated to a free chili dinner.
Door prizes were handed out every 15 minutes. Prizes were donated by local businesses and ranged from gift certificates to a pool membership.
Parents at the event expressed gratitude for the resources and the opportunity to take their kids out to something fun.
“I asked my son if he wanted to go to a carnival, and he was like, ‘Yeah,’” said Suzy Gishmon, Devonte’s mother.
“We’re always looking for fun stuff to do with the kids,”  Jacob Strecker, parent, said.
