It was a possible preview of the Class 4A state tournament Tuesday at the Maize boys tennis invitational, as the top two teams came down to Wichita Collegiate and McPherson, Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association rankings.

At the end of the day, the Spartans just edged out the Bullpups in the team scoring, 25-23.

As has been the norm for MHS this season, the doubles teams shined during the tournament.

The duo of Ben Davidson and Max Pyle went 4-0 and took first in the No. 1 doubles bracket. Ryan and Peter Horton captured the No. 2 doubles title, also going 4-0.

Senior Connor Schafer went 2-2 on the day for a fifth place finish in No. 1 singles play, while Dylan Stos captured fourth with a 2-2 record in No. 2 singles.

Eight teams participated in the tournament.

Next up for McPherson is a tournament Saturday at Wichita Collegiate.
