  • The McPherson High girls soccer team kept it’s momentum going Friday night, as they picked up their third straight win with a 3-0 shutout of Augusta on the road.
McPherson High coach Chris Adrian called it a much needed win for the team.
“Before the game, I told the girls I wanted them to really focus on two things,” Adrian said. “Attacking corner kicks and keeping a shutout.”
The Pups responded to Adrian’s challenge, as all three goals were started with corner kicks and the defense didn’t allow a single shot on goal.
MHS picked up their first goal after an Augusta player was whistled for a handball, setting up Colleen O’Connor for a penalty kick that she promptly buried in the Augusta net.
Minutes later, O’Connor knocked a corner kick off an Augusta player, which then went into the goal to make it 2-0 McPherson.
MHS kept the aggressive offensive play rolling, as Hailey Ruder set up Michelle Carrillo off a header for what would be Carrillo’s first varsity goal of her high school career.
Adrian utilized his bench in the second half, allowing his starters to rest for what promises to be a busy week for the Bullpups next week, with three tough home games on the slate.
The Pups (4-4-1) ended the second half without scoring, but did take 14 shots on goal for the game.
“If it wasn’t for Augusta’s all-state goalie, the score would have been much different,” Adrian said. “She made several great saves to keep the game close.”
McPherson comes back home Monday, where they will host an undefeated Valley Center squad at McPherson Stadium. Tuesday, the Pups host Winfield, with Mulvane coming to town on Friday.
“The confidence and momentum this team right now is going to be very important come Monday when we play Valley Center,” Adrian said.
The McPherson JV team was also victorious Friday, as they defeated Augusta 1-0. Danielle Lacy scored the Bullpups’ goal off an assist from Bailey Holton.
