  • Bullpup thinclads put on show at Emporia

  • While McPherson High didn’t take their full team to Emporia Friday and Saturday, the both Bullpup squads had a strong showing during the two-day Emporia Invitational.
    The Pups were split into two categories, Elite and Class 1-4A, with an number of top finishes going MHS’ way in either category.
    Brianna Cooks had a pair of first place finishes over the two days, taking the gold in the shot put (37 feet, 9 1/2 inches) in the Elite category and the discus (96 feet, 8 inches) in Class 1-4A.
    Bethanie Bouray finished first in the Class 1-4A javelin with a throw of 94 feet, 5 inches, while Megan Pedersen took first in the 1-4A high jump (4 feet, 6 inches) .
    Other field gold finishes went to Chris Stoppel in the Elite high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and Keshawn Sewell in the 1-4A long jump (19 feet, 4 inches).
    Track first place finishes on the boys side went to Joseph Jumonville in the men’s 300-meter hurdles (44.23 seconds) and Collin Harvey in both the 100-meter dash (11.63) and the 200 (23.84).
    Girls gold winners in the track events were Laynie Moore in the 100 (13.61) and Meredith Hess in the 200 (28.51).
    As a team, the boys had the top finish at seventh with 117 points. Manhattan claimed the top spot with 197.5.
    The Lady Bullpups finished at eighth with 102 points. Wichita East took the girls team crown with 197 points.
    A total of 18 teams competed over the two days.
    The Pups are back in action Thursday, as they host the McPherson Invitational at McPherson Stadium. Events get underway at 4 p.m.
