McPherson High came up empty on an AVCTL Division III road trip to Mulvane Thursday, falling 9-3 in game one and 5-4 in game two.
Senior pitcher Abby Steiner had been brilliant in her appearances on the mound so far this season, but that streak came to an end Thursday thanks to Mulvane catcher Bailey Holt. The junior, who has made an oral commitment to Wichita State University, unloaded for two home runs and a double off the wall in the first game, knocking in six total RBI’s.
Game two saw the Bullpups holding a 4-0 lead, thanks in part to the pitching of Marissa Axelson.
Unfortunately, a crucial error on a routine ground ball let two Mulvane runs score in the bottom of the sixth that tied it up at 4-4.
MHS (9-5) couldn’t get any runs in during the seventh inning, and a couple more errors in the Mulvane half of the inning let the Wildcats score the winning run.
“We are having issues with doing the little things correctly,” MHS coach Cody Stucky said. “When that happens, you’re not going to win the close games. Our defense is way too inconsistent right now and, if we don’t figure it our, we won’t reach our goals.”
McPherson returns to Grant Sports Complex Monday after spending the better part of April on the road.
The Pups host Rose Hill for a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
