  • The weather was still a little on the chilly side Thursday at McPherson Stadium, feeling more like mid-March than late-April, but the McPherson High School track and field teams were on fire, as the boys claimed first and the girls second in the McPherson Invitational.
The boys claimed their gold finish off the strength of six first-place finishes, while the girls had three firsts.
“We had some kids step up and do some amazing things,” McPherson track and field coach Jace Pavlovich said. “Like Cedric Shell in triple jump and Sean Seymore in long jump. Some kids that typically place, but, under the circumstances, came out and scored some gold medals.”
Shell and Seymore both had big days for the Bullpups. Shell was first in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 3 inches, while Seymore finished first in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 8 inches.
Seymore also picked up a bronze in the triple jump (37 feet, 10 3/4 inches), while Shell finished fifth in the high jump (5 feet, 6 inches).
MHS’ Chris Stoppel won the high jump with a height of 6 feet, while Adam Boyer took third (5 feet, 8 inches).
Bullpup senior Austin O’Bannon led the charge in the field events, winning first in the 200-meter dash (24.38 seconds) and the 4x100 relay with teammates Chris Stoppel, Collin Harvey and Kyler Kinnamon in a time of 44.47.
Kyler Jost captured a gold medal in the 110 hurdles (16.24).
As a team, the Bullpups scored 154 points, followed by Great Bend (137), Wichita North (108), Pratt (63), Newton (62), Goddard-Eisenhower (58) and Valley Center (57).
On the girls’ side, freshman Christina Wankum claimed first place in the 3,200 run with a time of 11:55.84. She also picked up a silver in the 1,600 (5:40.11).
Seniors Taylor Scheidegger and Meredith Hess finished one-two in the 300 hurdles, with Scheidegger clocking in at 53.86 and Hess at 54.61.
The Lady Pups also had one-two finish in the high jump, where Megan Pederson took first with a height of 4 feet, 10 inches. Janae Barnes placed second with a jump of 4 feet, 8 inches.
Valley Center claimed first place in the girls’ field with 136 points. That was followed by McPherson (119), Pratt (95), Newton (79), Great Bend (69.50), Goddard-Eisenhower (61.50) and Wichita North (48).
The McPherson Invitational was one of three meets that Pavlovich had identified at the beginning of the season that he expected the Pups to win. The first part of that goal was the Marion meet, which the girls finished first at while the boys took second.
“We’ve been looking forward to this meet ever since Marion,” Pavlovich said. “It would have been nice to have a couple of our girls at full-strength. We didn’t have Peyton Shook, who would have scored an anticipated 16 points. But we’re happy with the team’s performance. They continue to work hard, even inside, which is tough to do to keep focus.”
Page 2 of 2 - MHS has one more regular season meet next Friday at Goddard. The AVCTL meet will be held on May 10 at Southwestern College’s Jantz Stadium in Winfield.
Regionals will be on May 17, with State on May 24-25.
