  • Mother Nature hasn’t exactly been kind to the McPherson High Bullpups this week.
First was a blast of winter during Monday’s 3-2 loss to Valley Center. That was followed up by what, at times, felt like a monsoon during Friday night’s 3-0 home win over AVCTL Div. III opponent Mulvane.
“That first half, (the Bullpups) really were having a lot of fun out there, enjoying the weather,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said. “That second half they started to get a little cold and wanted to go home.”
McPherson showed no signs the adverse weather conditions affected them, however, as they completely shut Mulvane down, not giving up any shots on goal. MHS, meanwhile, took 12 shots on Wildcat goalie Olyvia Bish.
“We could have made the score line a little bit worse,” Adrian said. “We put in a lot of our girls that have been practicing really hard and had a great week of practice. It allowed us to rest some of those girls that have little injuries, things like that.”
McPherson’s Hailey Ruder was the driving force of the first half scoring two goals within 90 seconds of each other and both in identical fashion.
The first came at the 20 minute mark, when Colleen O’Connor hit a corner kick perfectly to Ruder, who then headed in the ball for the score. The same opportunity came with 18:41 showing on the clock, with a similar result; a Ruder header for a goal.
The Bullpups’ third goal game at the 35:05 mark of the second half, as O’Connor set up Hannah Willems to boot in a beautiful floater from about 20 yards out that just sailed over the head of Bish.
The JV also won by a score of 3-0. Olivia Hanson scored twice in the first half, while Ashtynn Unruh picked up a goal in the second.
McPherson (5-5-1) has a busy week next week, as they try to make up missed games on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. First up is a road trip Tuesday to Hays.
