  • It really was a tale of two halves for McPherson High Tuesday night at Hays, as the Indians defeated the Bullpups 2-0.
McPherson coach Chris Adrian said the team looked defeated after the first half, as they gave up both Hays goals during the opening 40 minutes.
The first was an own goal against McPherson that resulted from a mixup in the back. The second goal came after an errant pass that was tapped in.
“It’s hard to win games against good teams when you only play one half of hard soccer,” Adrian said.
“We came out flat and let Hays boss us around. They won the 50/50’s and just looked like they wanted it more as a team.”
It was a different story in the second half, however, as the Bullpups (5-6-1) played with more intensity and just missed out on tying the game, as shots from seniors Hailey Ruder and Colleen O’Connor missed by just inches.
“A goal would have really changed things for us in the second half, but it wouldn’t come,” Adrian said.
Ruder and O’Connor had the only shots on goal for McPherson. MHS goalie Shaelah White had eight total saves for the Pups.
Despite the loss, Adrian was pleased with the second half effort.
“It’s hard to flip that switch and suddenly pick it up, but that’s what they did,” Adrian said. “They played extremely hard and did not back down, even when they felt everything was going against them.”
McPherson closes the week with back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday. Thursday, the Pups travel to Buhler to face the Crusaders. Friday, MHS is at home against Winfield on Friday.
