In a world plagued with pain, hurt and broken families, it’s easy to feel defeated and feel like one person can’t make a difference. Even here in Kansas, thousands of children have been placed in the foster care system and need a home and a family who will give them safety and a nurturing environment in which they can grow.
This may get many folks down, but not the Magnall family. After seeing the difference that foster and adoptive parents could make through experiences in their own extended family, Cameron and Jennifer Magnall of McPherson turned to being TFI Family Services Inc. foster parents themselves. They have fostered three children in the last year and will soon celebrate the adoption of three more to their family.
“Being a foster parent is a huge responsibility,” TFI foster parents Cameron and Jennifer Magnall said.
“Besides being a parent to a child in need of care, you are often the child's tutor, therapist, chauffeur and sometimes even a support for his/her family. Despite all of these responsibilities, however, it is a huge blessing and worth every challenge. The time you spend with that child will be something they remember for years to come.”
The Magnalls not only touch the lives of the children who stay in their home, but they also have an impact on the lives of those children’s families. They say it is wonderful when a family works with TFI to complete their case requirements to have their children returned home to their natural family.
“(One of our) favorite part(s) of being foster parents has been keeping in touch with our kiddos after they have been reunified with their families,” the Magnalls said. “Although it is very difficult to see kids leave after loving them and caring for them, it is wonderful to see families back together.”
They point to the famous Starfish Story attributed to author Loren Eiseley, where a man comes upon thousands of starfish stranded on the beach, with one boy throwing starfish into the sea. The man asked the boy why he was throwing them back into the sea, telling him there were thousands to be saved and nothing the boy did could possibly make a difference. The boy picked up another starfish, threw it into the sea, and said “It made a difference to that one.”
“No one person or organization can save all children in need of care, but one foster family can make a difference to one or more children,” the Magnalls said. “In our case, we have fostered three children and now we are adopting three more. We have definitely made a difference to those six children, and that is a lot more than making a difference to no children.”
