An annual bike riding event Saturday promises varying degrees of difficulty, including up to 62 miles.
But it’s not just for serious cyclists; there are smaller treks for kids and families.
The third annual Bike Around McPherson for Families will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, at McPherson’s First United Methodist Church, 1200 E. Kansas Ave. Registration will open at 7 a.m.
Alana Murphy, executive director for the McPherson Family Life Center, said in addition to a 62-mile trek, there also are two-mile, 10-mile, 20-mile and 40-mile rides.
Murphy said families are encouraged to ride together at the event.
“We always try to do events to help build families,” she said.
Stan Smith, vice president of People’s Bank, has participated in the ride each year. Smith said it’s a good experience to have with friends.
“It’s always been a good experience,” Smith said. “There’s a lot of us that like to ride our bikes. And it’s for a good cause.”
In addition to the ride, a silent auction will be conducted at the church during the ride. The public is welcome to come to the auction. It’s free to attend, and registration is not needed. Items up for auction are donated from local businesses and include gift baskets, gift certificates and a queen-size mattress.
A drawing also will be conducted for three new bikes. The bikes include an adult bike, valued at $550, and a boy’s and girl’s bike, valued at $75 each. Tickets to enter the drawing cost $5 each.
Murphy said BAM FAM is the only annual fundraiser for the McPherson Family Life Center. The proceeds from the event will go to fund services provided by the center, such as parent counseling services, parenting classes, a sliding-fee scale for professional counseling services and a free infant visitation program for first-time parents.
“The rides have, so far, been our only annual fundraiser,” Murphy said, “So it is important to the sustainability of our agency and our ability to offer free and reduced-cost programs to the county.”
Each rider will receive a T-shirt and a meal, which includes dessert. Kids 12 and younger can ride free. Cost for teenagers from 13 through 17 is $20, and the cost for adults is $25. Families can register together for $40, which will include three T-shirts and three meal tickets. Additional shirts and meal tickets can be purchased separately, if needed.
Registration forms can be turned in to the McPherson Family Life Center, 401 E. Kansas Ave., or can be completed online at www.macfamilylife.org. Registration will take place the morning of the event as well.
