McPherson High qualified a few more swimmers for state Tuesday at the Hutchinson Invitational, as the combined Bullpup/Viking team took second.
The meet got off to a strong start with the 200-yard medley relay team of Sarah Almquist, Alex Underwood, Cheyenne Regier and Katherine Wurm taking first with a time of 2 minutes, 9.94 seconds, making the cut for state in the process.
The Pups also had a third place finish with the team of Shea Cook, Rhianna Smith, Claire Denk and Ellen Yowell with a time of 2:20.60.
The 200 freestyle relay team of Denk, Regier, Cook and Almquist also took first, winning by several body lengths with a time of 1:50.96.
Individually, Denk (59.25), Regier (1:01.59) and Cook (1:02.47) took the top three spots in the 100 freestyle. Denk also took second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:32.27, which qualified her for state in that race, as well.
Cook also brought home a gold in the 50 freestyle (28.23), while Underwood had a second in the 100 breast stroke (1:23.01).
The MHS squad has one more meet this weekend at El Dorado before the AVCTL meet, which the Smoky Valley swimmers won’t be allowed to compete in under league rules.
“All the girls are very tired,” MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said. “But, they are still giving everything they have into each practice and every race.”
The El Dorado Invitational will be held on Saturday at noon.
