  • The Bethany College men's golf team placed second at the KCAC Championship on Monday and Tuesday.
The two-day, 54-hole event was at Firekeeper Golf Course in Mayetta.
Ben Johnson, a sophomore from West Sussex, England, was the championship medalist with a total score of 223 (73-74-76) for a four stroke win over the field. With the additional tournament points, the win made Johnson first in the KCAC earning him Player of the Year honors.
"Ben had another outstanding tournament on a tough course, particularly the second day when high winds made tough conditions," Swede coach Jon Daniels said.
Bethany's team had a comfortable 11-stroke lead after the first round. Southwestern College started closing in on the second round but the Swedes maintained a seven-stroke advantage by the end of the day.
Midway through the third round on Tuesday, the Swedes began letting it all slip away. They could not match Southwestern hole for hole.
The Moundbuilders gained a 13 stroke advantage by the end of round three to take the KCAC title away from the Swedes (932) by six strokes overall (926).
Sterling was third with a total score of 961.
"I felt our preparation was excellent prior to the tournament, and we were hitting the ball well," Daniels said. "The first day we played well the first and second rounds to be the leader. On day two, we played well through 13 holes and then for some reason, other than (Johnson), we fell apart."
Lex Deal (third), James Tisdale (t-fifth) and Greg Miller (ninth) placed in the top ten in the conference tournament.
Matt O'Neill rounded out the team by placing tied for 19th. Johnson (first), Miller (fifth) and Jose de Lelo Larrea (seventh) placed in the top 10 for the year.
Johnson will go on to the National Tournament as an individual medalist. Nationals are May 14-17 at Creekside Country Club in Salem, Ore.
The Swedes ended their spring season with four first-place finishes and one second-place finish.
