Are there any regulations in place that state how brightly a sign, or any light, can shine within city limits?
Tom Stinemetze, McPherson planning and zoning administrator, said a sign within McPherson is limited at night to exceed no more than 3,000 nits.
A nit is a unit that measures the power emitted from a light source in a particular direction over the square meters illuminated.
The zoning regulations for a single light source are more broad, Stinemetze said.
“(A light source) is not allowed to create a nuisance to adjoining residential properties or create a hazard on a public thoroughfare,” Stinemetze said.
