  • All six McPherson High players are still alive after the first day of the Class 4A Smoky Valley Regionals, with five of the six already qualified for state.
With the semifinals and finals left to play Monday, McPherson is guaranteed one team in the doubles championships, as the team of Ben Davidson and Max Pyle will face fellow Bullpups Peter and Ryan Horton in the semis.
Davidson and Pyle advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 decision over the Chapman team of Nelson and Stroud in the first round. They then defeated Hesston’s Jacob and Isaac Penner 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the finals.
The Hortons blasted the Concordia duo of Sheely and Whitney 6-0, 6-0 to open up play Friday. They then defeated Circle’s Treweeke and Larson 6-1, 6-2 to set up the showdown with Pyle and Davidson Monday.
By virtue of making the semifinals, both teams are qualified for state, as the top six make it in.
In singles play, Connor Schafer is a lock for state after he advanced to the semifinals by virtue of wins over Chapman’s David Floyd (6-1, 6-2) and Buhler’s Tyler Wright (6-2, 6-1). He will face Abilene’s Matthew Barlow in the semis on Monday.
Junior Dylan Stos is still vying for one of the final state slots after going 1-1 Friday. He defeated Colby Wallace of Circle 6-0, 6-2 in his first match, then fell to Hesston’s Collin Martin (6-0, 6-0).
Stos must defeat Concordia’s Joel Timme Monday to make the state cut.
Smoky Valley’s Will Bochte was defeated in the first round by Buhler’s Kyle Doerksen (6-2, 4-6, 10-5).
The Viking’s Payden Schrag went down to Barlow in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
The doubles team of Alec Schneider and Trapper Bellah were defeated by the Penners 6-3, 6-0.
