  • In what was the last time this season the combined McPherson High and Smoky Valley High School swimmers would be allowed to compete as a team, they made sure they went out in a blaze of glory Saturday at El Dorado, taking fifth as a team and bringing home two individual golds.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Cheyenne Regier, Katie Wurm, Shea Cook and Claire Denk beat out host El Dorado by several body lengths, taking first with a time of 4:10.34.
The foursome just missed out on a second first in the 200 freestyle, losing out by less than two-tenths of a second (1:50.87).
The 200 medley relay of Wurm, Reiger, Denk and Alex Underwood finished fifth (2:10.44).
Denk also took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.34, a full 1.2 seconds faster than her previous personal best. Cook finished fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:02.63.
Regier posted a new personal best in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:19.4, which MHS coach Bonnie Sue Fisher said is only six-tenths of a second off the state qualifying time.
Fisher has been pleased with the way the two schools have come together this season.
“I believe that we have shown that good things happen when you work together,” Fisher said. “It has been a real joy to have been able to bring the excitement and the positive experience of high school swimming to the four girls from Lindsborg.”
The Smoky Valley girls will have weekend off as the MHS contingent will head into the AVCTL Championships Saturday, again at El Dorado.
The state meet is May 16-18 in Topeka.
