The Canton-Galva journalism program had a productive day recently at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association State Contest.


During opening ceremonies, both the yearbook and the news magazine were recognized as All-Kansas publications, the highest award given by the association to a yearbook or news magazine.

At a luncheon, journalism adviser Jessica Bowman was recognized by her peers with the Ad Astra Award. This award honors an individual who has displayed a significant effort to continually improve his/her journalism program or has made a significant contribution to the profession of advising in Kansas. Bowman received a $250 cash prize, a plaque and a complimentary one-year membership to the association.

At the completion of the annual journalism contest, officials announced Canton-Galva journalists had placed second in state. Their total score of 58 points was 19 points higher than Mill Valley High School, a 4-A school that earned the most points among the rest of the winners in other school classifications.

Canton-Galva winners in individual contests included:

Sarah Becker: First place in editorial cartoon and in editing

Jacey Cantrell: Honorable mention in advertising and in feature writing, third place in infographics and in news writing

Hannah O’Neil: Third place in photo illustration, honorable mention in newspaper sports writing and in infographics, third place in editorial writing

Chelsea Tabolt: Third place in editorial writing, honorable mention in academic photo

Jacob Dailey: First place in newspaper sports writing

Betsy Shobe: First place in yearbook copy, honorable mention in news page design

Lindsey Unruh: First place in headline writing, third place in cutline writing

Rachel Becker: Third place in student life photo

Julia Gormley: Second place in editing
