  • McPherson High seniors Colleen O’Connor and Hailey Ruder picked up hat tricks Tuesday night as the Bullpups blasted Great Bend 8-1.
The Pups definitely picked up right where they left off Monday in a 6-0 dismantling of Circle, with Hailey Ruder scoring the first two goals of the game assisted by O’Connor.
O’Connor turned around and scored the next two McPherson goals, once assisted by Ruder and once on a solo break-away.
Freshman Paige Schmidt put the exclamation mark on the MHS first half with a goal assisted, again, by O’Connor.
“This team has really shown what it can do this week,” MHS coach Chris Adrian said. “When we move the ball and pass well, we are so much more of a threat on offense.”
That scoring threat continued in the second half, as O’Connor again had a solo goal to start the second half. Ruder added her third goal minutes later off an assist by O’Connor.
Michelle Carillo added the eighth and final goal, fittingly assisted by O’Connor, who finished with five total.
“O’Connor had one of the best games of her career tonight,” Adrian said. “She is doing a great job of getting other players involved and her passing tonight was just as impressive as her finishing.”
In all, the Bullpups (7-7-1) took 16 shots on goal, while McPherson goalie Shaelah White had another quiet night in front of the net, only being called upon to make one save.
In the JV game, the Bullpups picked up a 2-0 win over the Panthers. Ashtynn Unruh scored the first goal off an assist from Sierra Bruner. Bruner also picked up the second goal off an assist from Olivia Hansen.
McPherson is set to end the regular season Thursday on the road at Buhler. The varsity game starts at 3:30 p.m., while the JV game will be at approximately 5 p.m.
