  • McPherson Letter carrier and the United Way will cooperate Saturday to collect food for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
The annual national food drive is conducted in May every year in order to restock food bank shelves before students are let out of school for the summer.
McPherson residents should have received bags, which were donated by Graber’s Hardware, in their mailboxes earlier this week.
Simply put nonperishable food in the bag and set it outside your front door by 9 a.m. Saturday. Letter carrier and volunteers will gather the food. Organizers ask that you do not donate expired food or food in glass containers.
If your food is not picked up Saturday morning, call the post office at 241-1532.
Anne Kirchner, United Way director, said foods that are healthy, but easy to prepare are the best choices. These could include tuna, peanut better, canned vegetables, or canned soup. Whole grain items, such as pasta, cereal or minute rice also are good choices, she said.
Kirchner also said she tries to look for low-salt alternatives.
If you did not receive a bag or you do not live in the city of McPherson, there is a collection bin at the post office in McPherson.
Kirchner said the need for food is critical at this time of year.
About 4,000 pounds of food has been collected during each of the last few food drives. Joyce Tolle, letter carrier and drive organizer, said she hoped the drive could reach its all-time high of 9,000 pounds this year.
