“No matter what” was the motto that characterized the life of Blake Reed.

Reed was a former football manager for both McPherson High School and McPherson College. He passed away at age 22 on Aug. 3, 2010, due to complications with muscular dystrophy. Muscular dystrophy is a disease that progressively weakens skeletal muscle.

In his honor, McPherson College will be hosting its third-annual Blake Reed Miracle Mile Saturday at the McPherson College Stadium.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m., with the race starting at 10 a.m. The fee to enter is $25.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the Blake Reed Mac2Mac Football Scholarship, which is given to football players who attend McPherson College. The scholarship is first considered to McPherson High School players who choose to attend the college before other candidates are considered. The race is divided into a men’s division, women’s division and youth division for those younger than 12. Plaques are given for first through third place for both the men’s and women’s division, and for first and second place in the youth division.

Anna Ruxlow, director of alumni and constituent relations at McPherson College, said she has long been a friend of the Reed family and had known Blake since he was a small boy.

“He did things no matter what,” she said. “He did things most of us would never dream of, and he spent the better part of his life in a wheelchair.”

That spirit is captured in what Ruxlow calls the “no matter what” reward. She said the award is not necessarily given to someone based on their place in the race, but on their willingness to complete the race, no matter what.

Entrants into the race will each get a T-shirt. The T-shirts that are given yearly have a logo based on a picture that Blake Reed drew during his lifetime.
