  • The McPherson High swim team continued their march towards the Class 5-1A State Meet with a solid showing Saturday at the AVCTL Meet in El Dorado.
Senior Cheyenne Regier had the top individual finish for the Pups. Regier brought home a silver in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.28 seconds.
Regier was also part of the silver medal 200 medley relay team with fellow seniors Sarah Almquist and Alex Underwood, as well as freshman Katie Wurm. The quartet finished the race in a time of 2:07.13.
McPherson coach Bonnie Sue Fisher was pleased, in particular, with Wurm’s performance in that race.
“I was really proud of how she handled the pressure,” Fisher said. “She is definitely going to be one of our top swimmers for the next three years.
Alex Underwood placed fifth in the 100 breaststroke wit a time of 1:22.94. Also placing fifth was the 400 freestyle relay team of Rhianna Smith, Courtney French, Ellen Yowell and Almquist. They finished in a time of 4:39.04.
Fisher is excited about the future of the swimming program after seeing the progress the underclassmen have made this season.
“I was so pleased with all of our freshmen,” Fisher said. “Besides the great relay split that Wurm swam, Lindsay Moore, Monte Kunde, Hannah Stecklein, Courtney French and Sara Houston all together dropped over two minutes in their combined races. They make the future look really good.”
The Smoky Valley High School members of the swim team were unable to compete in the meet due to AVCTL regulations.
The McPherson and Smoky Valley swimmers will make the trek to Topeka Friday and Saturday for the Class 5-1A State Meet to be held at Topeka’s Hummer Sports Complex.
