  • Junior Alex Ruxlow struck out 11 Kingman batters, while McPherson High rolled to an 11-1, six-inning win over the Eagles to open post-season play Monday.
Ruxlow was phenomenal in his six innings to open up the Class 4A Regional hosted by MHS at Grant Sports Complex. He faced 18 batters, giving up only two hits and one run, which wasn’t earned. He also only had one walk on the evening.
“Ruxlow and (catcher) Aaron Elsasser were at their best tonight, forming a terrific battery,” MHS coach Craig Marshall said.
The Pups struck first in the bottom of the first inning, as Austin Mitchell reached home off bad throw to third.
Logan Schrag then hit into a fielder’s choice to short stop, which allowed Nelson Steinert to score and make it 2-0 McPherson.
Marcus McDaniel then opened the game wide open in the third with a two-RBI double to left field that scored Steinert and Schrag and made it 4-0 Pups.
McPherson (8-11) picked up a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but then exploded for five in the sixth.
Steinert was hit by a pitch in the final at-bat of the game that scored Brodie Burney and forcing the run-rule into effect.
“I was proud of the way the guys came out and played their best game of the year to begin postseason,” Marshall said.
McDaniel ended up with three RBI’s to lead McPherson. Mitchell and Ruxlow both hit 2-for-4.
The Pups will face Wichita Collegiate (6-10) in the regional semifinals Wednesday at Grant. Collegiate advanced with an 11-6 win over Wichita Trinity Monday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
Should they advance against Collegiate, MHS will then face the winner of Andale/Smoky Valley in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Andale defeated Buhler 11-0, while Smoky Valley beat Nickerson 11-7.
Those two teams also start at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
