The Smoky Valley crowd at Monday’s Class 4A Regional Quarterfinal game between the Vikings and Abilene barely took a breath during the sixth inning.
Smoky Valley, on the verge of seeing their season end in the first round of postseason, trailed the Cowgirls 3-1 heading into the penultimate inning and desperately needed to make something happen.
Enter Maddie Klotzbach.
The senior slugged a clutch triple to left field that drove in two runs and ended up giving Smoky Valley (15-4) a 4-3 win to advance to the regional semifinals today at 4:30 p.m. against Rock Creek.
“We just kept battling and took good swings,” Viking coach Chris McClure said. “Maddie just got one to drop.”
Rock Creek (15-4) reached the semis by virtue of a 13-6 win over Chapman in one of the early games Monday.
