Deliveries for the 5th annual Summer Lunch program will begin on June 5.
Registrations are available at the McPherson County Community Foundation office at 206 S. Main or the United Way of McPherson County office at 306 N. Main.
The program is designed to provide McPherson families in need with a weekly grocery delivery during the summer months. The bags contain nutritional snacks and meal items such as peanut butter, jelly, bread, nutri grain snack bars, raisins, fruit cups and crackers.
Each bag will contain a certain amount of food based on the number of children in the family. For those children with allergies or special dietary needs, a separate bag with appropriate snacks is prepared.
The 2013 program will run from June 5 through Aug. 7.
During the school year, families may register for the weekend backpack program administered by the Kansas Food Bank. Every Friday, nutritional foods are placed in the backpacks of children attending the McPherson schools. The program, however, does not continue throughout the summer because it does not have a home delivery system.
In response to the need for continued assistance throughout the summer, the 2009 McPherson Leadership Class served as the volunteer base to coordinate and implement the program. The McPherson County Community Foundation and United Way of McPherson County serve as the coordinators for receiving registrations, accepting donations and responding to volunteer questions.
The Lisa Waldhauer Education Fund has financially supported the program since its inception.
Each year representatives challenge others to contribute to the fund and matches each gift dollar for dollar up to $5,000. In addition to the challenge, the annual Waldhauer auction offers attendees an opportunity to “bid” on a $100 donation card to benefit the program. At last year’s auction, $4,900 was raised through the bidding process.
During the 2012 program, 211 children received a weekly grocery delivery. The cost per child for the summer was $71.15 or a total of $15,013 for the entire program. It is anticipated the 2013 program will serve as many children for about the same costs.
The 2009 Leadership class of the annual Summer Lunch Program submitted a successful request for a $450 leadership project grant offered through the Huck Boyd Foundation and the Kansas Leadership Forum. The Waldhauer Fund representatives have announced they will contribute a dollar-for-dollar match of all auction donations at the annual event. Contributions to the fund are being accepted at the Community Foundation or United Way office.
