  • Eugene Martin "Gene" Naukam, Jr., 91, of McPherson, Kan., entered eternal rest at 5:25 p.m., Saturday, March 23, peacefully, at Cedars Health Care Center, McPherson, Kan.
    Gene was born in Buffalo, New York on Oct. 10, 1921, a son of Anna Louisa (Rahn) Naukam and Eugene Martin Naukam, Sr.
    Gene attended the Snyder, New York grade schools and graduated from Amherst Central High School in Snyder, New York.
    Through the years and with all the places they lived Gene always found a church home within the Lutheran Church and he served those churches in many capacities.
    He honorably served in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II.
    Through the years Gene worked for Swift & Company in Paducah, Ky., as a Sales Representative, and retired from Moore Business Forms Inc. as a Salesman.
    Gene was a member of the Shrine Club, was a 32nd Degree Mason,  and Lions Club in Overland Park, Kan.  He was involved with the March of Dimes in Midland, Texas, and helped organize the Muscular Distrophy Telethon there and was involved with developing a Lutheran mission church as well. Gene enjoyed golfing and had the opportunity to play a round with Arnold Palmer. He was always involved with the children's activities and sports and this carried on to the grandchildren. He also enjoyed cards and played bridge with his wife and many friends through the years. He enjoyed spending time in his yard and in his garden along with his wife Catherine.   
    Gene was united in marriage to Catherine Rowena Thompson on June 12, 1943, at Cleveland, Ohio. Catherine died on March 7, 2010.
    Surviving family members include his children, Gene Naukam III, and his wife Anna, of Edmond, Okla., Mary Ann Musselwhite, of McPherson, Kan., and John Naukam, of Smyrna, Tenn.; his six grandchildren, Monica Gerhardstein and her husband Joe, Drew Naukam and his wife Sharon, Cathy Jones and her husband Travis, Debra Naukam, Brian Musselwhite and his wife Beth, and Jill Ann Mead and her husband Justin; his five step-grandchildren- Gary Curt, Cheri Berry, Susan Curt, Sonja Hughes, and Sean Hughes; 12 great-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.
    Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Catherine; his brothers, Chester "Chet", Donald "Don", and Warren "Red", and John Naukam; and a sister, Betty Naukam.
    The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Glidden - Ediger Chapel, McPherson, Kan., with The Reverend Tim Leaf officiating.
    Interment of cremated remains will be held at the Crestwood Memorial Park Cemetery, rural McPherson.
    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the S.N.A.G. Golf Program, or McPherson Relay for Life, and they can be sent in care of the Glidden - Ediger Funeral Home; 222 West Euclid Street; McPherson, Kansas 67460.
